The 2012 Gulfstream Navigator Award Winner

This year’s $100,000 Gulfstream Navigator Award was given to Protei: Ocean Cleaning Sailing Robots presented by Gabriella Levine. Protei is a seafaring surface vessel, constructed to carry research instruments and environmental clean-up equipment autonomously over long distances on the ocean via wind power. The project was conceived in response to inefficiencies in oil spill relief efforts, and frustration with the unsustainable research and design costs of current robotic oceanic drones. Protei’s mission is to provide a locally accessible, economically efficient platform for the development of ocean-cleaning data collecting robotic drones. Their goal is to harness human innovation, technological ingenuity, and creative design to preserve the integrity of natural resources. Information may be found at www.protei.org/

The WWL Orcelle® Grant of 2012 Winner

Advancing a shipping and logistics solution for increased sustainability through zero-emissions, transport on land and at sea, the WWL Orcelle® Grant of 2012 and $100,000 has been awarded to Nonox: Emulsion Combustion Systems presented by Wes Pence.

Fossil fuel emissions contribute to global warming and are the root cause of many health problems. A proven method of cleaning up these emissions is on the inlet side of the engine/boiler through the use of water in oil-emulsified fuels.

The Nonox emulsion combustion unit (ECU) is a complete emulsion fuel system containing the mixing chamber and fuel/water proportioning controls. The ECU can be switched back and forth between emulsion and straight fuel at the flick of a switch. The Nonox Fuel Emulsions System is easy to install with little or no down time for the customer, the return on the investment is typically less than a year, and on larger installations much less than that. This system is most attractive in today’s market due to ever increasing fuel costs and more stringent emissions regulations. Information may be found at http://www.nonoxltd.com/

The Solutions Awards

The Ocean Exchange™ offers two incentive awards, underwritten by our Worldwide Sponsors, to outstanding Solutions Creators.

The Gulfstream® Navigator Award 2013 of $100,000 is given to the solution that demonstrates the greatest potential to address our theme with applicability across multiple industries generating positive impact on economies and the environment.

The WWL Orcelle® Award 2013 of $100,000 is given to the solution that makes shipping and logistics more sustainable by advancing zero-emissions marine transport and technologies that are commercially viable.

In addition to the criteria listed above, each award represents excellence and fulfillment of purpose while demonstrating the greatest potential for “LEAP TO ZERO+

Solutions Inspiring Action set themselves apart in two ways:
Feasibility and Ease of Implementation

  • Resources needed to implement the solution are readily available
  • The solution is cost-effective, or can be made so
  • The risks are identifiable, quantifiable, manageable and are minimal compared to the benefits

Breadth of Application

  • The conditions that need to be in place for the solution to be introduced are well defined
  • The solution is versatile and can be applied and implemented in diverse settings across multiple industries, countries and cultures

Attendees at The Solutions Exchange will cast their vote to select The Solutions Award Winners who will be announced on October 1, 2013.

The 2011 Gulfstream Navigator Award Winner

2011 Gulfstream Navigator Award
Wave Glider

The Ocean Exchange™ proudly announces that Liquid Robotics of Sunnyvale, CA is the recipient of the 2011 Gulfstream Navigator Award. The Gulfstream Navigator Award 2011 recognizes the best solution to positively Shape the Future of Our Coasts. Liquid Robotics’ “Wave Glider-Autonomous Ocean Vehicle” was selected by participating delegates during the inaugural Solutions Exchange, held in Savannah GA September 7-8, 2011, and was presented with the 2011 Gulfstream Navigator Award by Mr. Joe Lombardo, EVP Aerospace Group, General Dynamics, the parent company of Gulfstream.

The Wave Glider solution harvests energy from the environment and is able to travel long distances, hold station, and monitor vast areas of the ocean without the need for fuel or carbon emissions. A unique two-part architecture and wing system directly converts wave motion into thrust, and solar panels provide electricity for sensor payloads and satellite communications.
